Frilled Dragon Care Sheet |
|
~diurnal, terrestrial (good
climbers), omnivorous~
Size:
Frilled Dragons can get
up to 36", males being bigger (and less jumpy)
Longevity:
They usually live 7-10 years.
Housing:
FDs need at least a 55 gallon
tank for one or 75 is fine for two. 40 breeders are better though, it's
easier to get the UVB bulb closer the the lizard. It depends what you can get, really.
They should have a branch going up to the UV light; I've found they
constantly use it. There should be a food dish with vegetables always at
hand and a water bowl. Although not all will use it, some do
and it's worth having. Also, you should give them a bath once a
week and especially when they look like they are about to
shed. That's pretty much it for the furnishing except for:
Substrate: I've found AstroTurf works the best. it
retains most heat and is easy to replace and clean. It also
looks a lot nicer than most substrates for frilled dragons. DO
NOT USE SAND! FDs get impacted WAY too easily. You'll know if
yours is because the back legs extend backwards, and stay very
stiff. If this happens, give them a bath in warm water and make
sure they drink a lot.
The Temperature should be about 80 at the cool end and have a
basking spot of 110. This is vital and must be checked,
otherwise they will not digest properly.
Diet:
Because Frilled Dragons are
omnivorous, they eat a wide variety of vegetables. I use
the same thing as for my iguana: equal parts of: yellow squash,
acorn squash, butternut squash, and green onions. Collard Greens
are the best staple diet though. You can then just blend up enough to feed the
FD for 5 days
and keep it in the fridge. Every five days, repeat. (This only takes
about 3 minutes). All this can be bought at Publix. Live
Food:
For juvenile to adult you may feed crickets and super worms. I use
crickets and just breed them. Also, use very small crickets. I chose
crickets that are about half as long as the distance between the
dragon's eyes. Make sure to dust once a day for a couple months,
then move to every other day. For adults, you may feed rat pinkies
twice a month. This will add a little more fat to them. Make
sure you dust every other feeding. (Dusting: put crickets in container with RepCal
and shake {this is a high calcium powder made specifically for
dusting})
