Vocabulary/Definitions:

Arboreal - Living/thriving in the tops of trees and require a much taller terrarium

Carapace – The top part of the shell of a chelonian (turtle)

Chelonian – A turtle or tortoise

Cloaca – Opening under the tail through which many reptiles perform fecal, urinary, and reproductive functions. Also see Vent

Clutch – A complete group of eggs laid at one time, and some reptiles lay multiple clutches per season

Crepuscular – Pertaining to twilight; describing an animal active at dusk or dawn

Diurnal – Active during the day; opposite of nocturnal

Dusting - To dust is to put a feeder (ex. cricket) in a specially formulated high-calcium supplement that can be bought at most pet stores

Gut-Loading - This is when you feed insects VERY healthy food at least 24 hours prior to feeding them to your reptile

Herpetoculture – The breeding of reptiles and amphibians

Het - Short for heterozygous, or containing two different alleles. Ex: Aa would be Het for Albino, having one Albino (a) gene and one Normal (A) gene.

Hybrid - The offspring of genetically different parents. In example, a ball python to a blood python

Nocturnal – Active during the night. Opposite of diurnal.

Ophidiophobia -  The (irrational) fear of snakes...

Plastron – The bottom part of the shell of a chelonian

Prolapse – The expelling of either the penis or the intestines and the inability to withdraw them back into the body.

Scute – Each bony plate that makes up a turtle’s shell (as opposed to a scale)

Semi-aquatic – A species that can be found both on land and in water

Terrarium – A mainly terrestrial enclosure

Terrestrial - Living/ Thriving on the ground, in holes, etc, and do not require climbing objects.

UVA – Ultra-Violet A. This is the visible wavelength. It is responsible for inducing normal behavior in reptiles such as feeding, climbing, mating etc

UVB – Ultra-Violet B. One of the two non-visible wavelengths of light. This is what gives humans suntans. In reptiles, UVB allows for the synthesis of vitamin D3 which allows reptiles to process calcium in their system, thus preventing or reversing metabolic bone disease

Vent – Opening under the tail through which the turtle performs fecal, urinary and reproductive functions. Also see Cloaca.
